What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Crowns are used to restore the natural appearance, shape, and alignment of the teeth that were damaged due to decay or trauma. Crowns are the most effective way to repair teeth that have been severely injured or infected. There are different types of crowns, including:

  • Ceramic
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Gold alloys
  • Based on metal alloys

At our office, we offer porcelain crowns. We choose porcelain for its strength, durability, and natural-looking appearance. Our team can typically place your crowns in two visits.

Bridges are false teeth that are known as pontics. The pontics are placed in the area between teeth to fill a gap. If you have a large gap between your teeth, this could be a great option for you.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

The procedure for crowns may take more than one appointment. Impressions are made of the teeth and sent to a dental lab. Technicians then use the impressions to make the crowns. If temporary crowns were placed, they are removed, and the permanent crowns are bonded to the tooth to restore it. You will be given a local anesthetic in the area of the procedure, and the crown is secured with dental cement for a permanent restoration.

The procedure for bridges is a little different. This process may also require multiple appointments. During the first visit, your anchor teeth will be prepared for the crowns that will hold the bridge into place. The second visit is when the bridges are put into place. If needed, the dentist will give a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area and make you as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

What Are the Benefits of Receiving Crowns and Bridges?

The benefits of crowns can be seen right away. Not only do crowns strengthen the teeth, but crowns are also used to improve the appearance and shape of your teeth. Bridges can be used to maintain the strength of your bite and alignment of your teeth. People seek to have crowns or bridges not just to repair damage to the teeth, but also as a way to enhance the appearance of their mouth.
